This is Daisy Coleman. On the night of January 8. 2012, Coleman, then 14, and her friend were picked up by a 17 year old schoolmate to attend a party alongside him. There, they were given huge amounts of alcohol to the point of near-unconsciousness, before each being raped while the events were filmed. Later that night, after the act had been completed, Daisy was abandoned half naked outside, wearing no underwear and a skirt, in 22 degree weather. She remained there for 3 hours, still barely conscious, barely able to crawl to the door and scratch at it until her mother opened it, thinking that she was the dog wanting inside.

In the ensuing months that followed the rape case, and Daisy’s accusations of rape towards the popular older student, hell broke loose. This ranged from online threats to the burning her house down. The general population of the town rallied against Daisy and for the rapist, due to his popularity, name, and the fact that he’s related to a high-ranking elected official in the state government.

Daisy Coleman has attempted suicide multiple times in the wake of the events.

The only thing the rapist was ever charged with was endangering a minor. (x)

Do you still need more proof of rape culture?

As Noam Chomsky once pointed out for Z Magazine, old media types from the institutional bodies like American Enterprise Institute tend to regurgitate the same ideas with a reliability that is equally impressive and infuriating. While assuring the public that rape is a terrible crime, writers like Caroline Kitchens and Heather McDonald of right-wing think tank The Manhattan Institute try to claim that feminists have blown this whole rape culture thing way out of proportion.

Apparently, many women disagree. On Tuesday there were more than 1 million responses on the #RapeCultureIsWhen hashtag started by a frustrated Zerlina Maxwell in response to these right-wing narratives.
